Tools of the Trade

One of my all time favorite kitchen tools is my Microplane. A Microplane is similar to a hand grater, but MUCH better, It’s tiny razor-like edges are formed by a totally different process called photo-etching in which holes are dissolved with a chemical, leaving edges that finely slice instead of tearing or shredding. I first learned how much I wanted this tool when watching Food Networwork’s Ina Garten and Giada use to grate nutmeg and zest lemons. You can imagine how excited I was when I received it (alongside a Williams & Sonoma healthy cookbook) as an engagement gift…I literally jumped and screamed YAY! I not only using my microplane for nutmeg and zesting citrus fruits, but I am OBSESSED with using it to grate garlic into dishes, marinades and dressings. No matter what you microplane, the end product is really fantastic and can’t compare to that of a hand grater. It is not a big investment and I don’t know how I ever cooked with out it!
